Design Engineer

In AI product teams, a design engineer sits between design and code—prototyping AI flows in real stacks, defining motion and states agents must preserve, and reviewing generated UI for trust and craft.

The role matters because AI features are hard to evaluate in static Figma alone.

What it means

A practitioner who ships interactive AI UX, often with vibe coding and design systems tuned for agents—not only handing off redlines.

Why designers should care

Even if you are not a design engineer, you will collaborate with one—or play the role on small teams. Shared patterns and SKILL.md files reduce rework.

Example

A design engineer builds a composer with streaming, citation, and stop controls in production components, then documents anti-patterns for PM review.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming engineering will “figure out” trust states later.
  • Design engineers blocked from touching copy or error flows.
  • No catalog of AI patterns the team reuses.
