What's happening
Ask Maps is a chat side panel inside Google Maps. Answers stamp rated pins, open place cards, ground vibe copy in reviews, and can graduate into a Mentioned places list. The classic Place sheet still opens beside the side panel.
Patterns
Local job chips: commute, near me, open late, scenic walk
Place cards, overview maps, itinerary sections, dated event cards
Highlighted review claims and web source cards for events
UX Insights
- •The map is the result. Prose is the caption
- •Directions and Save are Maps verbs on AI cards
- •Dual Place chrome duplicates the same business
- •Mentioned places is the durable artifact
Design Decisions
Google put the assistant in Maps instead of putting Maps in Gemini. Chat is a closable side panel. Place, lists, and pins stay Maps objects.
